Interview with Yumiko Tanaka

Please tell me about your previous work experience.

In 2003, I joined Bridgestone Chemicals Manufacturing Co., Ltd. at the Nabari Plant as a mid-career hire, handling general affairs and human resources/labor relations. Subsequently, I served as the Human Resources and Labor Relations Manager at Archem Forming Japan Co., Ltd., where I was responsible for all aspects of human resources and labor relations. I was then transferred to the Shinagawa Head Office, and currently, I am the General Manager of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Archem Business Japan Co., Ltd., where I am responsible for all human resources-related operations for the entire company.

Please tell me about your current responsibilities.

As the head of Human Resources and Labor Relations, I am responsible for creating an environment where every employee can work with peace of mind and maximize their potential through recruitment, talent development, labor management, and the operation of HR systems. Currently, I am particularly focusing on health management. In recent years, against the backdrop of changing work styles, there has been growing interest in "health management," which links employee health to corporate growth. At our company, we work in cooperation with two public health nurses and, based on the idea that employee health leads to improvements in safety, quality, and productivity, we support the maintenance of physical and mental health through health education and promote the creation of a workplace where employees can work with peace of mind. Building the foundation to support these initiatives is an important role for us.

Are there any memorable experiences from your work so far?

In my more than 20-year career in human resources and labor relations, it's difficult to pick one specific event, but what stands out most in my memory are the many people I've met.
When I first joined the company, I had very little knowledge about the manufacturing industry, but I learned so much from everyone working in the factory and in each department.
Through my work in human resources and labor relations, I've come to realize that each individual takes pride in their work and contributes to the company's success. These daily experiences have become my greatest asset.

What's the atmosphere and interpersonal relationships like at your workplace?

Our team consists of members from diverse backgrounds, and we work together while respecting the knowledge, experience, and values that each individual has cultivated.
Regardless of age or years of experience, there is a culture that encourages people to share their opinions and ideas, creating an environment where everyone can learn from each other and grow together.
A culture of mutual support and teamwork in solving problems is deeply ingrained here. We believe that collaborating and leveraging each individual's strengths leads to a better workplace.

What do you feel are the essential or important elements required for your current job?

I believe that what is required in human resources and labor relations is a fair and honest attitude, as well as the ability to flexibly adapt to a changing environment. When implementing system revisions or new initiatives, various opinions may arise from related departments, including the manufacturing floor. In such situations, it is important not to proceed unilaterally, but to thoroughly understand the situation on the ground, provide careful explanations, and gain their understanding and acceptance. I believe that building trust with people from diverse backgrounds and working to solve problems through persistent dialogue are essential elements of human resources and labor relations.

What are the attractive aspects of Archem Business Japan?

Our strength lies in our integrated manufacturing and sales system, which allows us to handle everything from polyurethane foaming and processing to sales within a single company. We believe this system allows us to more closely understand our customers' needs and respond quickly, which is a major strength of our company. Above all, another attractive aspect of our company is that each and every employee working in manufacturing, technology, and sales takes pride and responsibility in their work and strives to create better products without compromise. We believe that this high level of professionalism is what leads to the trust of our customers.
