Creating the optimal workplace

Please tell me about your previous work experience.

I joined Bridgestone Chemical Products Tokyo Co., Ltd. in 1998 as a mid-career hire and was assigned to the Manufacturing Department at the Gotemba Plant. In 2018, I was promoted to foreman, and in 2020, I transferred to the Manufacturing Department at the Totsuka Plant. Currently, as a foreman, I am involved in the management and operation of the manufacturing site.

Please tell me about your current responsibilities.

As a foreman in the manufacturing department, I am working to improve the on-site environment and optimize the production system. In my daily work, I conduct interviews to address problems in each process, respond to equipment malfunctions, and collaborate with other departments to solve issues. I also analyze monthly production data and daily performance to improve processes, thereby promoting an environment that leads to overall factory efficiency and a reduction in overtime hours. Furthermore, I am focusing on revising and implementing work standards, and recently I have introduced "video standards" to develop an easy-to-understand training system for new employees.

Are there any memorable experiences from your work so far?

I have vivid memories of the chaos that ensued in the factory when we were simultaneously dealing with new orders from a major customer and increasing production. After discussing the issues with the skilled workers, we discovered that inventory management had become complicated. So, we introduced PCs to the factory floor, created a custom format for sharing order status, and established an environment where everyone could access the latest information. As a result, productivity improved significantly, and this experience remains a source of confidence for me to this day.

What's the atmosphere and interpersonal relationships like at your workplace?

At the workplace, it's easy to express opinions regardless of position, and there's a natural atmosphere for consultation and information sharing. Through experiencing various processes and interacting with many people, I feel that a culture of cooperation has taken root.

What do you feel are the essential or important elements required for your current job?

In manufacturing environments, flexibility, perseverance, teamwork, and risk assessment are essential. A willingness to think about improvements without being bound by procedures, along with the ability to notice even small discrepancies in sound, texture, or smell, support safety and quality.
